Asthma
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects the airways in the lungs, causing them to become inflamed, narrow, and produce excess mucus. This makes it difficult to breathe and can lead to symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. These symptoms can vary in severity from mild to life-threatening and may be triggered by factors such as allergens, exercise, cold air, respiratory infections, or exposure to irritants like smoke or pollution.
What are the Types of Asthma?
Asthma is often classified into different types, including allergic asthma (triggered by allergens), non-allergic asthma, exercise-induced asthma, and occupational asthma (triggered by work-related exposures). Treatment plans are personalized and may include long-term control medications, quick-relief inhalers, and lifestyle modifications to avoid triggers.
Who Does Asthma Affect?
Asthma can occur at any age, and while there is no cure, it is manageable with medications like inhalers (bronchodilators and steroids) and lifestyle adjustments. The goal of asthma management is to control symptoms, reduce the risk of asthma attacks (also called exacerbations), and improve overall quality of life.
